Posted Coordinates: N 44° 20.581 W 089° 53.804

Geocache Description:

A multi-stage, multi-element puzzle cache.

This cache was placed to honor the Veterans who have served in our Armed Forces during war and in peacetime.

As a Veteran myself, I have a great appreciation for those who have gone before me to defend our freedom.

I chose this location because this is the resting place of my grandfather, who is also a WWII Veteran.

Stage 1 - Solution

N44° 20.581, W089° 53.804

The year the war ended in which Gazeley served... This is X

Here are links that will help you find this information.

Robert F Gazeley
Korean War
Sgt. Gazeley served in the Korean War, which ended July 27, 1953.  Therefore,

X = 1953

Stage 2 - Solution

N44° 20.585, W089° 53.857

Alverson's Unit + Day of the Month in which the Korean War began... This is Y
Darwin W Alverson
Korean War
Alverson's Unit 805 + Day (25) of the Month in which the Korean War began.  Therefore,

Y = 830

Stage 3 - Solution

N44° 20.551, W089° 53.786

Schulz's rank multiplied by the Number worn on the shoulder of the Army's oldest infantry division...This is A
James W Schulz
Army - oldest infantry division
Schulz's rank (2) multiplied by the Number (1) worn on the shoulder of the Army's oldest infantry division.  (2 x 1 = 2)  Therefore,

A = 2

Stage 4 - Solution

N44° 20.519, W089° 53.828

The year the war ended in which Martinson served + the number of years the United States was involved in that war'

19__ (last 2 digits only)...This is B

Leonard J Martinson
World War II
Cpl. Martinson served in World War II, which ended in 1945 + the U.S. was involved in WWII from 1941 - 1945.  Note:  The CO did not use the actual dates to calculate this number. Only the years were used.  (45 + 5 = 50) Therefore,

B = 50

3.  Solve the Puzzle.

FINAL - Solution

Additional Hints:  be sharp and count to three

B# = C, and the third note in the score is a C.  Also, there are 3 notes in each puzzle measure that needs to be solved.

The musical score is for 'Taps'.  Here are the notes that are played in the puzzle Bars (aka Measures).  Assign an alphabetic numerical value to each note (A=1, B=2, C=3, etc)

Bar 2 = CGC = 373
Bar 3 = EGC = 573
Bar 5 = ECE = 535

(BAR3 + BAR5) / A - B = N44° 20.___

(573 + 535) / 2  -  50 = ???

(1108)/2 - 50 = 504

X - Y - BAR2 = W089° 53.___

1953 - 830 - 373 = ???
1953 - 830 - 373 = 750

4.  Put the Solved Coordinates together.

Solved Coordinates:
   N 44° 20.504, W 089° 53.750

5.  Verify the Solved Coordinates.

Since there isn't a geochecker, use Google Maps to determine whether the solved coordinates seem reasonable.

Google Maps - solved coordinates
The solved coordinates are on public land, very close to the cemetery, in a lone tree.  This looks like a very reasonable location.

  1. I don't remember how I solved this one,but I did record the solution as a personal cache note. I went on a caching trip with the CO and he gave me a hint, but I don't remember what it was, either. Something to do with the key of B sharp.
