1.  Here is the puzzle.

This cache will test your perseverance Çapacity and your frustration toleränce by presenting you with a puzzle that must be solved to obtain the correct coordinates for the cache. It probably looks hard at first but I bet there are those out there who won't be able to rêsist the challenge. The solution might be mentally draining and the find may be as well, but just think of how satisfying it is to write your name on that logsheet and take courage. Prizes are included for the first 3 finders including McDonald's Gift Certificates.

Additional Hints

1.  a.  Solve the word puzzle.
1.  b.  Read between the circles.

2.  a.  Four groups in each row.
2.  b.  Each group represents a letter.

3.  a.  Background in electronics would be helpful.
3.  b.  Pay attention to the words with funky characters (Çapacity, toleränce, rêsist)
3.  c.  Colors have numeric values.

2.  Solve the word puzzle, and read between the circles.

There are a total of 17 geocaching words in the puzzle (Heist is not one of them).  Circle each of the words.

Now identify the letters that are not circled, and write them down in order.  Then separate the letters into words that form a message.

The message is:  GROUP BY THREE, USE BASE THREE.

Combine this hint with the Additional Hints.

2.  a.  Four groups in each row.
2.  b.  Each group represents a letter.

3.  a.  Background in electronics would be helpful.
3.  b.  Pay attention to the words with funky characters (Çapacity, toleränce, rêsist)
3.  c.  Colors have numeric values.

3.  Group the letters in each row (four groups per row).

G G F - O U T - D O O - S G
G N I - H C A - C O E - G U A

4.  Assign numbers to each letter in the puzzle.

Use electronics color coding to assign numbers to each letter in the puzzle.  Refer to the chart below.

Since the decoded message said you should use Base 3, only the numbers 0, 1, and 2 will be needed.  Using information from the electronics chart, assign numbers to each letter in the puzzle, as follows:

  • Black = 0
  • Brown = 1
  • Red = 2

G G F - O U T - D O O - S G
1 1 2  -  0 2 0  -  1 0 0  -  0 2 0

G N I - H C A - C O E - G U A
2 0 2  -  2 2 1  -  2 0 1  -  1 0 0

5.  Using Base 3 (Ternary), convert the number sets to Base 10 (Decimal).

Here is a link to a Base-N Converter:
http://www.mathsisfun.com/numbers/convert-base.php

112, 020, 100, 020  =
14, 6, 9, 6

202, 221, 201, 100 = 20, 25, 19, 9

220, 201, 100, 220 = 24, 19, 9, 24

020, 100, 211, 012 = 6, 9, 22, 5

222, 012, 200, 120 = 26, 5, 18, 15

002, 221, 212, 202 = 2, 25, 23, 20

022, 100, 200, 202 = 8, 9, 18, 20

221, 201, 012, 211 = 25, 19, 5, 22

012, 112, 201, 100 = 5, 14, 19, 9

220, 201, 012, 211 = 24, 19, 5, 22

012, 112, 202, 221 = 5, 14, 20, 25

020, 120, 210, 200 = 6, 15, 21, 18

6.  Make a list of the numbers converted to Base 10.

14, 6, 9, 6, 20, 25, 19, 9, 24, 19, 9, 24

6, 9, 22, 5,
26, 5, 18, 15, 2, 25, 23, 20

8, 9, 18, 20,
25, 19, 5, 22, 5, 14, 19, 9

24, 19, 5, 22,
5, 14, 20, 25, 6, 15, 21, 18

7.  Convert the numbers to letters.

Refer back to the Additional Hints:  "Each group represents a letter".

First, number the alphabet.

1=A, 2=B, 3=C, 4=D,5=E, 6=F, 7=G, 8=H, 9=I, 10=J, 11=K, 12=L, 13=M, 14=N

15=O, 16=P, 17=Q, 18=R, 19=S, 20=T, 21=U, 22=V, 23=W, 24=X, 25=Y, 26=Z

Next, assign a letter to each converted number.

14=N, 6=F, 9=I, 6=F, 20=T, 25=Y, 19=S, 9=I, 24=X, 19=S, 9=I, 24=X

6=F, 9=I, 22=V, 5=E,
26=Z, 5=E, 18=R, 15=O, 2=B, 25=Y, 23=W, 20=T

8=H, 9=I, 18=R, 20=T,
25=Y, 19=S, 5=E, 22=V, 5=E, 14=N, 19=S, 9=I

24=X, 19=S, 5=E, 22=V,
5=E, 14=N, 20=T, 25=Y, 6=F, 15=O, 21=U, 18=R

8.  Remove the numbers, and separate the letters into words.

N FIFTY SIX SIX FIVE ZERO

BY

W THIRTY SEVEN SIX SEVENTY FOUR

9.  Put your solved coordinates together.

     N 44° 56.650, W 089° 37.674

10.  Verify the solved coordinates using GeoChecker:
